## Executive summary

SilentSale is a UK-only consumer-to-consumer (C2C) marketplace for buying and selling between private individuals. Its defining feature is **shared protection**: on every deal, both the buyer *and* the seller are protected, through a model called **SilentCover**. This is a deliberate break from the marketplace norm, where protection covers the buyer only and the seller carries most of the risk.

SilentSale is operated by SilentSale Ltd (UK company no. 16457502), London. It is currently pre-launch, with an open waitlist at https://silentsale.co.uk.

## The problem

Peer-to-peer selling in the UK is large, popular — and risky:

- **£2.3 billion** is lost to marketplace fraud in the UK every year (UK Finance).
- **1 in 3** marketplace listings could be a scam (TSB).
- Only **18%** of fraud victims ever recover their money (Cifas).

Two structural gaps make this worse:

1. **Buyer-only protection.** Sellers face chargebacks, non-payment and "item not received" claims with little cover.
2. **Unsafe in-person sales.** Local deals usually fall back to cash — quick, but risky for both people, with no record and no recourse.

## The solution: SilentCover

SilentCover is SilentSale's shared-protection model. The core mechanic:

- Both the buyer and the seller contribute a small amount to SilentCover on a deal.
- The buyer's payment is **held securely by the payment provider** until the buyer confirms the item is as described.
- On confirmation, funds are **released to the seller**, and the payout is fast.

Because release depends on confirmation, the buyer can't lose money on an item that never arrives or isn't as described, and the seller is shielded from chargebacks and no-shows. **Both sides are protected equally.**

> SilentCover is a discretionary protection service applied at SilentSale's discretion. It is a protection layer, not a financial product.

### Two ways to complete a deal

- **Shipping** — tracked UK couriers, with protection end to end.
- **PIN Pickup** — for in-person handovers. A PIN is exchanged at the meetup, and that is what releases the held payment. It removes the cash-in-hand risk from local sales. PIN Pickup is a safety mechanism for face-to-face selling; it is not shipping, tracking or delivery.

## What makes SilentSale different

1. **Both sides protected** — never buyer-only.
2. **Seller protection built in** — sellers are not left out of pocket.
3. **Secure in-person sales** — PIN Pickup instead of cash-at-your-own-risk.
4. **Fair, shared cost** — protection is split between both parties.
5. **Verified people** — real accounts, no anonymous profiles.
6. **Fast payouts** — money in the seller's bank quickly.

## Pricing

Each side pays a small SilentCover contribution on a completed order: a flat amount from £0.50 plus a small variable share of the item price, always shown at checkout before you commit. Both the buyer and the seller pay the same way. The full breakdown, including any percentages, appears in the Terms & Conditions.

## Use cases

- **The burned seller.** Someone who lost money to a chargeback on another platform sells on SilentSale, where the payment is held until the buyer confirms and can't be clawed back unfairly.
- **The high-value buyer.** Buying a phone, games console or designer item, the buyer knows the money is only released when the item is confirmed as described.
- **The local meetup.** Two people meet to hand over an item; PIN Pickup secures the payment instead of relying on cash.
- **The cautious first-timer.** New to selling online, a user gets both-sides protection as standard rather than having to understand complex rules.
- **The fairness seeker.** Someone who wants an alternative to Vinted, eBay, Depop, Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree that treats buyer and seller equally.
