Hand-carved clear quartz sculpture of Nyami Nyami, the Zambezi River serpent spirit, by Shona artisan

Nyami Nyami is a revered deity in Tonga mythology, believed to be the river god of the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe and Zambia. This serpent-like spirit is considered the protector of the Tonga people and is often depicted with a snake-like body. The carving tradition became particularly significant after the construction of the Kariba Dam in the 1950s, which displaced the Tonga people and separated Nyami Nyami from his wife according to legend. These hand-carved representations are created by Shona artisans using traditional techniques passed down through generations, typically carved from indigenous hardwoods. Nyami Nyami carvings are highly valued by collectors of African tribal art, ethnographic artifacts, and folk art enthusiasts worldwide. These pieces appeal to those interested in African spirituality, mythology, and traditional craftsmanship, as well as travelers who visited Zimbabwe and Zambia seeking authentic cultural souvenirs. The sculptures represent both artistic skill and deep cultural significance, making them meaningful additions to collections focused on African heritage and spiritual iconography.
