  1. SilentSale®: the same standard formula on both sides

There are no listing costs. The standard seller contribution to SilentCover® is deducted after a successful sale; review your earnings preview.

SilentCover® is a discretionary protection service under the SilentSale® Terms. Both sides protected equally: buyer and seller each contribute £0.30 + 3% of the item price. Decisions depend on the Terms and evidence.

£10 item: buyer pays £0.60 SilentCover®, seller pays £0.60. Before delivery and any eligible adjustments, the buyer pays £10.60 and the seller receives £9.40.

  2. Vinted: seller charges and a variable buyer total

Use the price list and the actual checkout amount when calculating a buyer’s total.

Vinted lists items for free and advertises zero selling charges. Source

Vinted’s price list describes a variable buyer charge, usually 3%–8% plus £0.30–£0.80, shown at checkout. Compare the actual checkout total. Source

  3. eBay: distinguish private and business selling

The £10 calculation below uses an eligible UK private sale, within the free-listing allowance and without optional upgrades or overseas delivery.

UK private sellers get 300 free monthly listings on eBay and no final-value selling charge for eligible domestic sales. Motors, business selling, upgrades and other exceptions have different costs. Source

For an eligible £10 item price set by a UK private seller, eBay’s published buyer calculation is £0.10 plus 7%, making £0.80. The buyer sees £10.80 before postage, including that charge. Source

  4. Depop: payment processing still matters

Separate a selling charge from processing and optional promotion. A buyer maximum is not the charge every buyer will pay.

Depop has no UK selling charge, but its UK payment processing costs 2.9% plus £0.30 on the item price, shipping and applicable taxes. Optional boosts cost extra. Source

For UK buyers purchasing in GBP, Depop’s marketplace charge is up to 5% plus up to £1, excluding postage and taxes; checkout shows the actual amount. Source

  5. Gumtree and Preloved: different transaction models

Read what is included before comparing a classified advert with an in-app checkout.

Gumtree’s online payments guidance lists no seller transaction costs and a buyer charge of £0.70 plus 5%–10%, depending on the item. Delivery is additional for the buyer. Source

Preloved describes no listing or selling charges, with optional account upgrades. Source

Preloved’s safety guidance says it does not handle transaction payments. Source

  6. Make your own like-for-like calculation

Use the same item price and delivery assumption. Add the actual buyer charges, then subtract the actual seller deductions. Compare issue rules and evidence requirements alongside the money.

For Shipping, report problems within 72 hours after confirmed delivery, or the collection scan for a locker or parcel-shop order. Confirming receipt closes the window early, so inspect first.

PIN Pickup is an in-person handover. The buyer inspects the item before sharing their six-digit PIN; the seller enters it in the app to complete the order. The PIN is acceptance. There is no shipping, tracking or post-handover dispute window.
