What does “Hi I'm interested” mean on Gumtree?

On its own, it means very little. One UK seller reported a run of those messages. It is not proof of a scam, and it is not a Gumtree rule.

What to do

  1. Reply once and ask which item, what they need, or when they can collect.
  2. Do not share your home address in that first reply.
  3. Do not post the item or pay a fee because of the opener.
  4. Stop if they switch to a courier, a deposit, a payment link or a text code.
  5. If you use Buy now, wait for the order inside Gumtree, not a chat that says they have paid.

  1. Is “Hi I'm interested” a Gumtree button?

Gumtree’s help pages that we checked do not describe a preset that sends “Hi I'm interested”. Do not treat the line as official Gumtree wording.

One seller on Reddit, in January 2026, said that since August 2025 his photography ads drew messages which said only that, and that people then went quiet or stayed too vague to book. The archive of the post shows a score of 1 and three comments. That is one report. It is not a measure of how many sellers get the message, and it does not show that Gumtree sends it.

One UK seller wrote on Reddit in January 2026 that, since August 2025, Gumtree messages about his photography services said only “Hi I'm interested”, and that replies were missing or too vague to become a booking. A public archive of that post shows a score of 1 and three comments. That is one report. It is not a Gumtree rule, and it is not a count of how often this happens. Source

  2. What should I reply?

Ask one concrete question. Which item, when they can collect, or what they want from a service ad. A person who means it can answer.

Stop if the next message is a courier, a request to pay a deposit before you meet, a bank transfer “to hold it”, a payment link, or a text code. Gumtree’s payments page says its own online payment shows as Buy now, and that bank transfers are not supported on that checkout. A one-line opener has not paid you.

Gumtree’s online payments page, dated 16 September 2026, says buyers can pay at checkout by UK Visa or Mastercard, Apple Pay or PayPal, and that bank transfers are not supported. For delivery-enabled items it says secure payment is available on eligible items up to £250, and that the Buy now button shows when payment on Gumtree is available. For postage it says the seller is paid when the buyer confirms the item or 48 hours after the carrier confirms delivery with no dispute. For collection with online payment it says the seller enters the buyer’s 6-digit Collection Code, the sale is then complete, funds are released immediately, and that action cannot be reversed. Facebook’s Marketplace safety help says not to answer a message or email that asks for a verification code or for account information such as your email address and password. It says Facebook will never ask you for your password. Source

  3. How is this different from “is this still available”?

Both are short openers that do not agree a price or a time. On Facebook, sellers complain about “is this still available”, and Facebook’s Lite help describes a different preset, “Is this available?”, which may be unavailable in Europe. Gumtree’s pages we opened do not document “Hi I'm interested” as a button.

Handle them the same way. Answer once, ask for a detail, and do not send your address or the item because of the opener.

Facebook’s Lite help says you can tap Send to message a seller with the words “Is this available?”. The same page says this feature may be unavailable in Japan and in countries in Europe. That preset is not the sentence “Is this still available”, and the Europe note means the page does not prove the button is offered in the UK app. Source

  4. Where should I read next?

Read the Gumtree Buyer Protection fee only when the advert shows Buy now. For the short openers, see “is this still available” on Facebook, a courier and cash and a text code from a buyer. The comparison is SilentSale® vs Gumtree.

Questions people ask

Are these messages bots?

We cannot say. One January 2026 Reddit post described the line and then silence. The archive shows one post, score 1, three comments. That is not a count of bots, and Gumtree’s help pages we read do not call it an official button.

Should I reply to every “Hi I'm interested”?

One specific question is enough. If you get no useful answer, you can stop. You do not owe a meeting to a one-line note.

They then asked for my email so they can pay. What now?

Do not move the sale to email because of that note. Gumtree’s payments page says to use Buy now where it appears. A PayPal email can be faked. Read the fake payment email guide before you send anything.

Does the Gumtree Buyer Protection fee apply to this message?

No. The fee is described for a Buy now checkout, not for a chat that only says hello. Cash, a bank transfer and a PayPal deal in the messages are not that checkout.
