How does eBay collection in person work?
The buyer pays on eBay, inspects the item, then you scan a QR code or enter a 6-digit code. eBay tells you to decline cash that moves the sale off eBay.
What to do
- Take the payment in eBay checkout before you meet.
- Let the buyer inspect the item.
- If they are satisfied, scan the QR code or enter the 6-digit code.
- If they ask to pay cash or by a private transfer, decline and keep the sale on eBay.
- If the code is not entered yet, use the judgement eBay’s help page describes.

How does the eBay collection code work?
The buyer pays at eBay checkout and chooses collection in person. eBay gives them a QR code or a 6-digit code to bring.
Give them time to inspect. If they are satisfied, scan the QR or type the code on the order. eBay says that confirms collection. It is also what eBay points to if they later say they did not receive the item.
eBay says you need that code to complete the handover. It also says to use your own judgement about handing the item over before you have entered the code. If you forget at the meetup, ask for the 6-digit code and enter it on the order as soon as you can.

If they are satisfied, ask for the QR code or the 6-digit code, then scan or enter it. eBay says that confirms collection, and that the code is what it uses if the buyer later says they did not receive the item. What about cash on collection?
eBay’s page does not say that cash is banned. It does tell you what to do if the buyer wants to leave eBay.
If they ask to pay cash, pay by bank transfer, or move the conversation off eBay, the page says decline and keep the sale on eBay.
A transfer you cannot see inside eBay is not the code process. Read fake payment emails before you trust a screenshot.
eBay’s collection help page says that if the buyer asks to move the sale off eBay, including cash, a bank transfer or private contact, you should decline and keep the sale on eBay. The page does not say that cash itself is banned. Source
When is the money available after collection?
Two eBay pages disagree, so this guide will not pick one and hide the other.
The getting-paid page says local-collection funds are available within 24 hours after you enter the 6-digit code, or after the buyer scans the QR code.
The collection page says that once the order shows as Collected, funds will usually be available within 48 hours.
Open the order and use the date on the screen. A hold, described in the payout guide, can override both sentences.

Can the buyer open a case after they have collected it?
Yes, for some reasons. eBay says that if the item is faulty or not as described, you work with the buyer in eBay. That can be a return for a refund or a replacement.
If they want to return it for any other reason, your options depend on the returns setting. eBay says that if the listing says no returns, you do not have to accept that other request.
The code proves the handover. It does not, on eBay’s page, close every later complaint. Keep messages inside the order.

What is the in-person alternative on SilentSale®?
Arrange the meetup only after the order is paid. Let the buyer look at the item properly. Share the code only when they accept it.
PIN Pickup on SilentSale® is a different handover. The buyer pays in the app, inspects in person, then shares a 6-digit PIN. You enter it to complete the order. There is no cash. There is no dispute step after the PIN is accepted. Buyer and seller each contribute £0.30 + 3% of the item price to SilentCover® (£0.60 each on a £10 item), a discretionary protection service. Stripe processes the payment and holds the funds until completion.
Read collection without cash, collection-only items and SilentSale® and eBay. Meeting the buyer is optional if you post instead: sell without meeting.
PIN Pickup is an in-person handover. The buyer inspects the item before sharing their six-digit PIN; the seller enters it in the app to complete the order. The PIN is acceptance. There is no shipping, tracking or post-handover dispute window.
Stripe processes payments and holds funds until the order completes.
Questions people ask
What should I open first?
Close the email or the text. Open the marketplace yourself, in its app or by typing the address. Read the order or the notice there. Do not send documents, codes or passwords to anyone who contacted you first.
Is cash on collection banned?
eBay’s collection page does not say cash is banned. It tells you to decline if the buyer wants to move the sale off eBay, and it names cash, a bank transfer and private contact as examples. On the handover, the same page says to use your own judgement about handing the item over before the code is entered.
When do I get the money after the code?
eBay’s getting-paid page says within 24 hours after you enter the 6-digit code or the buyer scans the QR code. eBay’s collection page says funds will usually be available within 48 hours after you confirm the code. Open the order and use the date eBay shows you.
Can the buyer still open a case after collection?
Yes. eBay’s collection page says a faulty or not-as-described item still has to be resolved through eBay, which can mean a return or a replacement. A return for another reason depends on the returns setting in the listing. The code is proof they collected it, not the end of every disagreement.
How is PIN Pickup on SilentSale® different?
The buyer pays in the app, inspects the item in person, then shares a 6-digit PIN. You enter the PIN to complete the order. There is no cash. There is no dispute step after the PIN is accepted. It is a different set of rules from an eBay collection code.
